With winter road maintenance impacted by weather conditions, residents are advised to avoid travel if possible
Norwich Township has declared a significant weather event for Township roads for the evening of Monday, December 29 due to the ongoing snow accumulation and drifting across Township roads.
Under the Municipal Act Ontario Regulation 239/02: Minimum Maintenance Standards (MMS) for Municipal Highways, a Significant Weather Event may be declared by municipalities when minimum standards for winter maintenance activities, such as snow clearing and ice control, cannot be met due to severe, unpredictable, or unsafe weather conditions.
Norwich Township Road Crews are continuing to work to clear roads, but are experiencing reduced visibility and blowing snow. Depending on conditions, it may be necessary to suspend operations if it becomes unsafe for plows to be on the roads. Staff will continue to monitor the situations and will call an end to the Significant Weather Event when it’s safe to do so and winter road maintenance standards can be achieved.
If you must travel, go slow, make sure all your lights are on, and pack a winter vehicle emergency kit. If you are driving behind a snow plow, stay back, be patient, and don’t try to pass. Plowing creates a cloud of snow that can decrease visibility and simulate whiteout conditions.
